SMOCKING DEMONSTRATION AT GUILD CIRCLE MEETING

The arts and crafts circle of the Hastings Townswomen5s Guild met in the W.D.F.U. room on Thursday, Mrs L. W. Goldlinch, circle leader, preaiding over an attendance of 60 members and friends. With her was Mrs A. C. A. Hyde, the secretary. After reciting the Women 's Creed, several new members were welcomed, and also those who had rejoined the circle after an absence. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs A. F. Glenny and Mrs liood. An announcement was made that 2000 flags^were to be sold in Hastings before June 3, dn aid of tho Coronation children 5s camp fund, and membbrs were invited to assist in disposing of a portion of the flnge.' Burge, of Twyford, gave a most interesting aud dnstructive icsson on smoelung, wliich was followed with keeii interest by all present. Pieces of britway, needles and thread were distributed, and a great many niembers took the opportunity of learning to do smockiug m a practieal way. ander Mrs Burge's able tuition, each process of the work beihg explaincd and shown step by step. As it was lmpossible to linish tho work, and show the different stitehes used, in the time at her disposal, Mrs Burge kindly offered to come again and give another. losson to those suifieiently interested. It was arranged to meet on Wednesday, June 9, at 2.30 in the sain o room. Mrs Deaus proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Burge for her instructive and useful lesson. There were 17 entrdes in the competition for the six best-plain scones, and these were judged by the leader, who later congratulated members on the jjdondid entry and exeellent scones preiented. Rirp E. Riley and Miss Ebbett tied t'or Iirst place and each received "i trophy; Mrs Bryan t was tlxird, Mrs Dyer v.b.c., Mrs T{. Mackay li.c.. and Mrs Harper, eonnnended. A briug-and-buy stall. with jelly, vegetables, etc., and an array of cooking, did exeellent business, and was sold ont, the f'.mds of tlie circle being considerably ajigmented thereby.
