fBr Telegraph

WELLINGTON, Last Night. In the second match of their New Zealand tour the Bnglish Amateur Association football team defeated Wellington at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon 7 — 0. Displaying excellent understanding the visitors were never in danger of being beaten and the crowd of 10,000 was delighted with the exhibition of fast and clever football. Though they led by only 3 — 0 at half-tme the Englishmen had had niuch j the better of the game, effectively Ismothering any Wellington attacks be:fore they became really dangerous. The visitors played a stopper-back game, Joy (centre half) being outstanding as third defender. Collins was the most ;aggressive of the English forwards, his ispeed and footwork enabling him conIstantly to penetrate the Wellington dsJ fence. His centres were well picked up by Mathews and Thornton. Wellington showed themselves quite as fit as their opponents, Todd (right half) and the full-backs, Miles and Haines being outstanding on defence. They were peppered with shots from all tangles. Wyatt in goal saved many more than he let past. - Thornton sco.red after nine minutes' play and two goals by Mathews gave England a 3 — 0 lead at half-time. Mathews (2), Thornton and Finch ecored in the second spell. Leslie, the Wellington and New Zealand centre forward, was so well marked by Joy, the English centre half, that comparatively little was seen of him duTing the afternoon. Recognised as the iinest amateur in England Joy played an outstanding game and so effective was his defence that all the fuflbacks, Strasser and Robbins, had to do was to work the opposing wing men •and this they did to such gopd effect that Huddle, the t^ll English goalkeeper, was not often troubled.
