ECLIPSE PARTY
Arrival at Island • SYDNEY, May 28. A radio message from the warshi; Wellington with the New Zealarn. scientists aboard, who are to observe the forthcoming eclipse of the sun. states: — "We arrived at Canton Island at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The Avocet is at an anchorage near the passage reef, and H.M.S. Wellington is anchored close to tbe Avocet. After courtesy calls had been made it was too late for the expcdition to disembarkj and landing operations will be commenced at daybreak to-morrow." The Avocet is the American naval escort to the National Geographic Society 's Solar Eclipse Expedition. It had been planned originally that the New Zealand party should land on Enderbury Island, which lies some distance away in the same group. Both islands are notorious for landing difficulties, and apparently it has been deeided that both expeditions shall make use of Canton Island.
