Mr Maddison pointed out that Flag Day emanated from the custom adopted by his late Majesty King George V., who every Armistiee Day planted a smali cross on the lawn opposite Westminster Abbey, and his example had been followed by thousands of citizens. From this custom had been evolved tbe proposal that on Flag Day the people of New. Zealand should buy • small Union Jacks and plant them ia some prominent place. This little ceremony in Hastings next Wednesday is to commence at 11 a.m. when the Mayor and borough councillors will conduct a very brief selYice and plant flags in the grass plot in front of the cloek tower. The people of Hastings and the surrounding districts are invited to attend the little function and place their flags, which may be purchased any time now at 1/- each, ir the grass plot. "I have arranged for a street collection and sale of flags for next Wednesday," said Mr Maddison.
