DENIED HE WAS DRUNK
Man Convicted in Napier Court Although he pleaded not guilty a.nd gave evidence on his own behalf. John Henry George Blane, of Napier, labourer, was convicted by Mr. F, J, Annan, J.P^ in the Napier Police Court thfs morning on a charge, of being found drunk yesterday afternopn in Emerson street, Napier, and -was fined £1, in default four days' imprisonment. An application for time to pay the fine was rpfused by the Bench. Constable S. Tucker gave, evidence that when arrested the defendant was drunk. He had been making a nuis. ance of himself in the area, and had had to be put out of one shop, Defendant: Did you sea a stone in, my hand? Constable Tucker; Yes*. Did you see me drop itf — "I saw you drop it or throw it. It broke on the groupd." "If I can say how many pieces it broke into will you still say' I was drunk?" asked defendant. The constable did npt reply, and defendant then g-ave evidence that he had been home just before the time he. was arrested and .was not drunk then. A conviction was entered.
