CONTROL OF RABBITS

Experiments witK Virus Disease Details of the programme which is to be carried out at Clark Island, off the coagt of Tasmania, with the virus disease for the extermination of rabbits, developed in Britain by Sir Henry Martin, were announced recently in Ganberra by the Minister in charge of Development, Sehator McLachlan. Clarke Island has been selected for the preliniinary tests to ensure that the virus is not plaeed beyond control, pending confirmation of evidence that it attacks only the rabbit. The research will be in field tests conducted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Researoh. Senator McLachlan said that experiments so far carried out by officers of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research at the University of Melbourne had been successful. Their object was to ascertain whether other Australian animals were immune from attack. Although the experiments were not completed, they were |ufficiently encouraging to induce the council to make tentative arrangements for the next stage of the work. If the initial work oh Clarke Island is successful, virus will be used on the whole island.
