Million Passed for Year's Revenue Over a million a year is spent by New Zealanders in communicating by telegram, cablegram, and trunk telcphones. Post Office receipts from these sources first reached the hiillion mark in 1929, and maint&ined it for another two years. Then, reflecting world-wide economic conditions, the revenue fell below the millions for five years, although in 1936 it was again approaching it. An incrcase of £104,453 in gross revenue from telephone toi! calls, cablegrams, and telegraois in the year ended March 31 last brought the total to £1,058,288. These large figures are even more impressive when translated into ternis of telegrams aifd toll calls, as follow:— Toll messages .... 13,143,171 Telegrams ...... 5,117,498 In both cases the financial returns demonstrated 'increased service at lessened cost, for the telephone toll traf-, fic increased nearly 15 per cent., while the revenue rise just over 124 per cent. Telegraph traffie increased by 12 per cent. and the cash receipts rose by 8.44 per cont. The greatest telegraphic increase was sliown in connection with urgent messages, 144,035 ' having been sent during the year, an increase of 35,327 of 324 per cent., while the reve4 nue results went up by just over 28 per cent.
