Union Agit^tors Beat^n at Ford Works STRIKE THREATENS

DETROIT, May 27. An outburst of violence in which at, least a dozen union representatives wero kicked, beaten and driven away marked the flrst attempt of the U.A.W. to organisq tho Eord employees. Eichard Erankensteen, directing the membership drive, and Walter Beuther, president of the U.A.W. nnions, were attaeked by a group of employees at the gate of the itouge plant where they were directing the distribution of union hnndbills, and were knocked down repeatedly. In subsequent fighiing the employees gucceeded in ronting all the union party. Seven of those injured ara said to be women. None were seriously injured. The U.A.W. of Richmond, California, sponsored a strike and closed tho Ford plant, pickets barring the entrance of o£lcials and 1800 employees. Nearly 80,000 gteel workers in flve States faced idleness as the Tesult of a strike order issued by the O.I.O. affiliate. The strike resulted from the Corporation's xefusal to sign a closed shop contract. Picketing is planned. A Vancouver message says the Lewis, organisatipp. (G.I.O.) has penctrated British Oolumbm, where 500 are on strike at two gold mines. The strikers are demanding recognition of the Lewis Union and an increase in wages.* The miires were closed with the offi-, cial statement that the owners will not' tolerate alien agitators. The waterfront workers at seven; British Columbia ports are calling aj meeting to discuss proteetion "against! foreign attempts to oxploit- thej workers." |
