Ho was tbe eldest son of Hobepa" "Mahanga, and liis age would appear tq be not less tban 100 years. He received bis early education tbrougb the missionaries at the Bay of Islands, his uncle, Te Moronga, being one of the first Maoris to take up mission work under SamueJ Marsden. Th§ chief was a student of Maori genealogy and had tbe eomplete ponfidence pf bqth Mao?is and Eurppeans. He attendefi the Coronation ceremony in Whangarei and retniped all bis faculties up tQ the time pf bis death. He is suryived by Ms wife and five children. There are 30 grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
