ALPINE SLIDES SHOWN BY MISS K'ATE GARDINER
A great treat was enjoyed by the members of the Hastings Women 's Community Club last evening when some very fine slides and films of the Southern Alps were shown and described by Miss Kate Gardmer, a noted alpinist who ,-is at present the guest of Miss Irene Cnambers, of "Mokopeka," Havelock North. Mrs. W. J. White presented a very pretty little corsage spray to Miss Garcliner, who was wearing a gown of black taifeta pattarned with bunchos of deep shaded flowers, and having bouf • faut sleeves and a clasp of bulliants at the neck. Miss Gardiner tsaid that her slides and fllms, the greater part of which she took herself, showed many, of the climbs which she had enjoyed during the recfent very happy moutns spent in' the fcjouthe.rn Alps. Her ^icnbing was done With the two guides with whom she had climhed on and o£f for the last 10 years, Vick Williams and Prank Aldck. The pictures, which were shown by Mr. H. Lovell-Smith, were most bcautiful and every oue present envied Miss Gardiner , her numerous wonderful climbs. A particularly interesting picture showed Alice Peak, which Miss Gardiner had climbed and being the first to do so she was permitted tqname it after her aaother. .Bhe also named Lake Agnes, a beautiful mountain lake. Many pictures of mountain flowers and f ems were also shown and seeu with inueh interest. At the conelusion Miss Gardiner said that the moUntains of the Southern Alps were the most beautiful she had ever seen, and she appreciated them more and more every time she visited Now Zealand. Mrs. W. G. Stead, on behalf of the club members, thanked Miss Gardiner i'or sharing her experienecs with them alL Dr. D. A. Bathgate, on behalf of the members of the Heretaunga Trainping Club, said how thrilled they had ueen to have an opportunity to hear Miss Gardiner spealc and to see her coilection of ruagnificent pictures. He said that Miss Gardiner was known all over the world, and that her capabilities as a clbnber were greatly appreciated. Mrs. W. J. White, leader of the literary circle, who arranged the evening, proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Lovell-Smith for showing the photographs. \vhile supper was being enjoyed Miss Gardiner met the club members and the trampiug club members, auioug whqni was Mr. Ian Powell, who holds the 'record for the fastest climh of Mo'iut Oook. -•••-• - Among those preseut were: Mrs. W.
