SPEED LIMIT AT CLIVE
Recommendation To the County Council Clive is the only township in tke Hawke's Bay county for wkick a speed restriction ■ of 30 m.p.k. seems advisable to tke Transport Department officer wko recently inspected tke county. At tke annual meeting tkis morning, tke Hawke 'a Bay County Council expressed itself as being in agreement witk tke recommendations of tke officer. "Tke main road at Clive carries a keavy volume of-motor traffic," states the letter reeeived from the department. "The roadside is extensively built up, there i's local pedestrian and other traffic, and there are also several side 'roads and the bridge, with comparatively short visibility for high speeds. If your councii concurs I shall recommend to" the Minister that this be declared a" clo'sely-populated area- iu terms of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act in order that speeds on the main highway may be restrieted to a maximum of 30 miles an hour, I wouldpoiiit; out that this does not imply that vehicles may travel up to 30 miles an hour under- all traffic conditions. "The section to which I would suggest the restriction should apply is ffom a point about five ckains on the Napier side of the bridge to within three chains of Mill road." Westshore, the letter continued, had good visibility, and exeept in holiday seasons there was not much local traffic. The suggestion was made that regulatidn Warning signs be erected bearing the words "Beach Settlement" or other appropriate description. Cautionary .signs would also sufflce at Bay View.
