UNWARRANTED EXPENSE
Erection of Overhead Bridge At Taradale Koad Crossing COUNTY CRITICISM A protest against what they considered unwarranted expenditure in the erection of an overhead traffic bridge for the railwky crossing on the NapierTaradale road was made yesterday by members of the flawke's Bay County Council. Members pointed out that the proposed completion of the Kennedy road extension to form the main road between Napier and Taradale and the proposed erection of a traffic bridge between Port Ahuriri and Westshore would have the effect of taking mueh of the traffic off the road aud that the expense woul^ nqt then be warranted. The chainnan, Mr F. B. Logau, commented that the ramp would cost £20,000 or £30,000 und that it appeared that traffic dauger on the road itself would be greatcr thau any danger on the erossings. A sleep grade would lead to the ramp, and at tho top there would be two branches leading on to the Westshore and Taradal road. Mr P. Ericksen: I think it as an objectionable thing, but I do not know what we can do. Tlie proposed exten-. sion of Kennedy road completely alters the question. We should get the matter held un at Ifiast.
Mr Logan: The erection of a new traffic bridge to Westshore seems quite likely, and tkat would take a great^ deal of the traffic. Mr C. C, Smith: It would be better to install a crossing-keeper to stop traffic when trains are due, and that would cost much less thau the Tamp. A motion was passed asking the Transport Department to postpone the erection of the ramp until the effeets could be seon of tho pro"posed changes in route to both Taradale aud Westshore.
