CATTLE-STOPS & FENCING

Ifnportani Decision Made By County Ctiuiicif A decision of considera'ble interesfr to farmers Wa# mride this morning by the Hawke's Bay County Council, when a motion that in cases where the substitritiori of a caftle-sfop for a gate on roadS traversing a property is permitted by the council fh'e permi'ssion should be fof ihe penod of one yerir only and should come up for review at the 6rid of that timo Wai diSdusSed. This took the place of a mofiori that if pefmissio'ri for a, cattle-stdp W6fe grarifed the settler should be coimpelied to c'dmplete a certairi poftidri 6f fhe rdad-fdndirig each yerir. Thd positiori at pre'seiit is that if a settler wishes to remove a gate ori the roria acroSs hiS prdp'erfc thd Sides of the road must tueri: be fericed. . At this morning 's meeting of the corincil, the question arose of fencing where a crittld-stdp is permitted.- The chairman, Mr. F. B. Logan, suggested that where permission was granted for a cattle-stop in plac'e of a gate ihe settler should be required to complete an agreed amount of the required fencing each year. "The permission for a ,cattle-stop shduld not bo xenewed indefiniteiy,/' said Cr. M. S. Chambers. "it should be granted for a term, wifh no promise fo renew it at all. The diflioulty onw is tliat if a section of fence is completed each year it is useless until completed absolutely. It is deteriorating all the time, and stock get behind it and have to be mustered .right to the end. If the stop is granted* and permission is reuewed for a period of yeaiBj it can finally be reviewed, and if the position is not substantially altered, then we san ol'der the stop to be removed," Mr. Logan agreed that he had not jonsidered the question of deterioratiori, and th'e suggestiori of Mr. Chambers Was adopted.
