iHv
WELLINGTON, Last Night. "A number of eerious accidents have occurred because lorry drivers havo been working such long hours that they are not as vigdlant as they should be," said the Magistrate, Mr E. Mosley, today when what was stated to be tho first prosecution of its kind was before him, one of permitting an employee to drive for more than 11- hours in any 24 hours. It was brought by the Highways Board against Walter John Lankey, ofDannevirke. Mr Mosley said thatvin his opiniou, strict enforcement of the regulafion was very necessary. It was impossible for a man to be engaged for 16 hours as was suggested in this case, without experiencing weaxiness which should not be pTesent in a driver, und especially dn one who had to control a heavy vehicle. "Any future cases will have to be met with by means of a severe penalty," .he said. A fine of twenty shillings and costs was imposed.
