HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Talks at Napier Meeting On Monday evening the monthly meeting and talks arranged by the Napier Horticultural Society was held in Thorp's Building, Mr. C. D. Wilson presiding over an attendance of 40. The report and balance-sheet of the recent chrysanthemum show was presented and discussed and considered very satisfactory. The following new members .were duly eleeted members of the society: Mesdames L. Krogh, P. Barlow, Boyd, F. Smith, T. H. Bingland, Waddington, Misses Beach, O'Connell, Burden, Anderson and Messrs. Sparling and H. Holt. Since the last meeting the membership of the society has increased by 20, and now stands at 356. The exeeutive is anxious to inerease this to 400 by the end of the year. The main speaker for the evening was Mr. H. Evetts, who chose as his subject "Gladioli." The care of the plants until the corms were lifted was stressed, and the coTrect treatment after liftdng was given in detail, also the proper method of storing for the winter. Mr. Evetts had the latest American information on his subject, and members were most appreciative of the talk. "Garden Eoutihe for May-June," was chosen by Mr. R. G. Wilson for^ a short talk, and plants and seeds -suitable for present planting were given. In view of ihe November show, notes on sweet peas were also given. .... .The third talk was given by Mr. W. Sarvey, who gave a very interesting resume of the recent bush-conservation conference held in •Wellington, and over which His Excellency the Gover-nor-General presided. This conference, Mr. Harvey stated, was the most xepresentative one he had attended, and excellent results should come of it. A speeial tribute had been paid at the, conference to Mr. and Mts. F. Hutchinson for their most generous gift of native bush. 1 At the conclusion of the talks, speaxers were thanked on the motion of the chairman. The competitions for the evening resulted aa follows: Best bloom: Mrs. M. Alexander 1, Mr. J. W. Olphert -and Mrs. B. Holt 2 • (equal), Mts. B. Holt 4 (12 entries). Best vase of flowers: Mrs M. Oxford 1, Mr. B. G. Wilson and Mr. B. G. Wilson 2 (equal), Miss V. Lynam 3 (8 entries).
