LONDON, May 23. The political correspondent of the Australian Associated Press understandis that Britain as the outcome of ithe Dominions' representations at the Imperial Conferenee has tentatively abandoned her intention to support ot the League Assembly the early Tecognition of Italy's conquest of Abyssinia. This was apparently the issue from which difficulties arose in the Foreign Affairs discussion, necessitating the appointment of a committee of the heads of the delegations. Mr. Eden, it is believed, empkasised that Britain regarded recognition distastefully but perceived some advantages in it. However, Mr. Savage 's and 'to a lesser degree General Hertzog's iopposition culminated in Britain aban'doning the initiative. •The small committee also dealt with League 'refonp. in connection with this question. Most of the Dominions, advocate a universal League but on a consultative in preference to a coercive basis. It is understood Mr. Savage urged the tightening up of sanetions. The Dominions appear to agree that nnless ! reform is soon undertaken it will be too ' late to rescue the League. They rej gard a Western Eutopean Pact as au ; iinportant contribution toward pacificaj tion and approve of Britain 's underj standing with France and Belgium for j increasing the% security of their own ; frontiers, but vigorously oppose any | British commitment to Centrai European i complications. The Dominions seem to favour rapprochement with Germany, • realising tho alarming deterioration in AngloTtalian relations.
