MAN STRUCK BY TREE

— Preaa AasociatioB.)

Victim Carried Out From Bush RESCUERS' HARD TASK

tBy Telcgrsph

GISBORNE, This Day. On Saturday morning a party of five men were engaged in procuring fencing posta in the midst of thiok bush on the property of Mr J. Hope, three miles from the hornestead, and about 20 miles from Matawai. Good progress was made until, when felling a promising tree, it toppled unexpectedly and struck a young man named Wraith Grayson on the back. Seeing that he was seriously injured, word was sent to the hornestead and to Sister Pritchard, distriet nurse at Matawai. Sister Pritchard gave instruotions as to the removal of the injured man and arranged to meet the party as soon as possible at the nearest point, some three iniles from the scene. The other members of the party— Messrs Gerald Wilson, Ronie Wilson, Peter Kopura and Gordon Hope — hurriedly made a stretcher with bush timber and eacks, and- then set out to oarry Mx Grayson to the nearest point to meet the distriet nurse. The country is in many places covered with dense bush, and is very rough and precipitous, being almost impassable at times. The journey was a most trying one, as can be judgpd by the fact that the party, despite the knowledge that it. was. of vital importance to get medical help as eoon as possible, took over two hours tp cover the three miles. Finally when they were almost worn out, they saw Sister Pritchard advancing to meet them. After receiving attention, the injured man was transferred to the car and was driven to Cook Hospital, arriving there at 8.45 p.m. It was at once seen that Mr Grayson, who is a young man residing in Manutuke, had received very serious injuries to his back. Last night he was reported to1 be very comfortable.
