A CHANGE OF FRONT?
4 The statement that he saw no reason for the continued existence of B radio stations, as the Labour Government was now making complete arrangements for .the whole of the Dominion to be covered with nationally-owned wireless stations, was made by Mr. A. F. Moncur^ M.P. for Rotorua, in the course of an address at Papakura. There would, he said, be three places in New Zealand where the present stations did not reach. They were Nelson, Invercargill, and a point in Hawke's B»y. These places would need boosting stations. Then the Government would take over all the broadcasting and there would be no need for the B stations. Commenting on this statement^ the Auckland Star says: "The public's memory may be sh»rt) but not so short tha; one of the outstanding features of the election campaign 18 months ago is not clearly and generally remembered. In that campaign the Labour Party, through its leader, undertook that if it were elected it would 'save the B stations.' The undertaking was given without reservation, and it gained the party 's candidates many votes. Mr. Moncur should be more eandid, and tell the people that the Labour Party has changed its view since it became . the Government, and that it now actively discourages B stations, not because it thinks they are less popular |and appreciated now, but simply because it regards them as politically inconvenient.
