HASTINGS WELL DOWN

Opportunities Seized By Hastings H.S.O.B. WINNERS IMPRESSIVE The match-wlnnlng factor for Hastings Old Boys in their game with Hastings early in the afternoon was the aptitude of the exstudents to seize the opportunities that came their way to a greater degree than did their opposition. Old Boys played quite impressively, being more enterprising than Hastings, who were strictly orthodox in their method. Old Boys fully deserved their 14 — 4 win. The teams werp as follow:— Hastings H.S.O.B. — McCarthy, Palmer, Holt, Lowe; Devine, Patrick, Hardy, Hughes, Redward, Rankin, Irwin, Rawiri, Ford, Avery, Thompson. Hastings.— Dyer, Wright, Ewin"1 Robertson, Nelson, Cooke, McVay; Tate, Howell, Chadwick, Croft, Wil* Bon, Aldridge, McDonald, McNab. For this game there was a light northeriy breeze and Hastings had the advantage of it during the major portion of the first spell. Old Boys were early on. attack, and a crosskick by Hardy saw Thompson give chase and on reaching the ball give it a ligiht kick into tbe scoring area and then pouncing on it for an easy try. Shortiy afterwards there was a sirailar set of circumstances in which Patrick and Rawiri were the principals and Old Boys lay six points up. Old Boys were playing a good allround game, particularly among the forwards, who were definitely on top m„the tight. Honours were more even in the loos© where Tate, "Wilson, and Aldridge showed up prominently. Territorialiy the play was in favour of Old Boys, but just before the interval the ball came out of the rack near the Old Boys quarter-way for Nelson to land a neat field goal and make the half-time score yead 6—4. A fine break by the Old Boys backs within the first minute of the second spell Was responsible for another five points that gave the side a commanding lead. For a time" the play wa» very even, with Hastings showing slightly improved form, but they were never the dangerous factor that the Old Boys backs 'were, and toWards the close of the game Old Boys were again attacking strongily. Success came their way from a penalty goal to put the finishing touch to the scoring. The scorers were.— Hastings O.B. (14) : McCarthy (penalty goal " and one conversion), Thompson, Rawiri, and Palmer (try apieee). Hastings: (3): Nelson (field goal). Mr J, Geenty was referee.
