FAULTS IN GRADING
fBy Telegraph-
. CHRISTCHURCH, May 21. The Governmqut/s scheme for fhe marketing of onions has proved a failure and the South Island Oriion Marketing Advisory CGmmittee cit a liveiy meeting yesterday decided to recommend that the present grading fce abolished in its entirety and a iair average quality grade substituted. The scheme was stated to be not aeceptable to either growers or merchants, and a most serious aspect was tha| soft onions, which usually were marketed at this tiiue of fhe year, became unsaleable. ' : To xelieve the position the Government announced recently that it would purchase a quantity of first-grade onions, but when buyers called on the growers it was found .that a very emall 1 .j^roportion of the onions were graded as first quality; in fact, ,the Governiment purchase3 do not.exceed 150 tons. Meanwhilo, large . quantities of soft onions have been left xotting in the paddocks. .
