Legislation Regarding Date

,K» Telesraph-

WELLINGTON, Last ITight, ■ Following" an announcement that ' legislation is to be introduced next session of Parliament to provide for the observance of the King's Birthday on Juhe . 9, ' instead of the actual date, December 14, the Acting-MiniBter of Labou'r (Hon. P. C. Webb) explained i to-night the ' oblrgations of employers | required to - allow their employees a | haif-holiday on the Sovei^eign's biithj day.. ! "The Factories Act, 1921-22, and the majority of awards and agreements made under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1935, and agreements under the Labour Dispntes Investigation Act, 1913, provide for the observance of a holiday on the King's birthday," he said. "I think it desirable, therefore, to point out for the information of employers that the Goverument proposes to introduce next session legislation to give effect to the change in the date. of the observance of the King's Birthday. Where, therefore, employers are required by the Factories Act or by an award or agrcemenfc to allow their employees a holiday on the King's Birthday, they should allow siich holiday on Jun. 9. Failnre to allow a holiday on this 'dny will, when the necessary legislation has been enacted, ren^er employers liable to pay the sp.ccial ratcs prescrib'ed by the Act, award or agreement, to all employees who. worked .on that day. 1 ' Among other things that woighed with the Government in following the lines adopted in Great Britain this year whs the inconvenience that would be caused t'o ,the business community by the observance of a holidnv on December 14." _ _____
