""" WELLINGTON, May 21. Opposition to any extension of the Nelson system of religious instruction in schools was expressed at the annual meeting q±* the New Zealand Educational Institute. The following remit was carried by 60 votes to 22: — ' 'That it is desirable that religious instruction in the schools should be limited to the Nelson system." The mover of the remit, Mr. W. P. Williams (Wanganui), sitd the institute had always been ofiicially against Bible teaching in schools. Mr. W. T. Slater (Ruapehu), who seconded the mofion, said the time taken was immaterial. There was a principle at stake. He said he did not feel that he should lead children in devotional exercises. Mr. A. I. Isdale (Wairoa) said the voluntary nature of the proposed extension was not really voluntary; many people we.re taking devotional exercises because of a slight fear of reaction of the community and the boards.
