ARTS AND CRAFTS DISPLAY BY SOUTHERN H.B. INSTITUTES
• The arts and crafts display of Women 's Institutes controlled _ by the Southern Hawke's Bay Federation, was held in the Dannevirke, Drjll Hall on Thursday. The eshibition was opened "by the Mayor, Mr Gibbard, and afterwards Mr and Mrs Gibbard in speeted the handierafts and expressed admiration fdr the many beautiful articles displayed. Later in the after noon Mr Gibbard presented the prizes to the succestsful competitors. "■If you know a good_ thing paas it, on.." This favourite injunetion of Women 's Institutes was exemplifled by the score .of institutes who had articles dteplayed. Some of these institutes have women ,who know, how to inake beautiful rugs; other women are adept at maki'ng useful 'articles from waste roaterials; ' others, again, have artistic skill far above th'e' average, aud there are the toy-makers, the ' basket-workens, the needle women, the 'knitters, the cushion experts, and so on. Speeimens of all these classes of work aud others were to be seen iD the Drill Hall at Dannevirke. The makers will doubtless have a busy timo afterwards in explaining how they do it, for a spirit of mu tuai helpfulness is charact'eristic of Women 's Institutes, and after seeing the arts and craft, mauy women will be eager to emulate the efforts ?f their fellow members. Articles were displayed by the following institutes — Ongaonga, Waipawa, Waipukurau, Wallingford, Porangahau, Otane, Pukehou, Takapau, Waikopiro, Norsewood, Ormondville, Piri Piri — Glengarry, Hua Roa, Mangatera, Raumati, Te Rehunga, Papatawa, Wimbledon, Herbertville, Weber, Makotuku, Matamau. Mrs D. Campbell (Opapa), president of the Southern Hawke's Bay executive and Mrs G. L. Jamison (Wallingford), secretary, wero in charge of the exhibition, An interesting demonstration in wool-spinning was given by Mrs Smith, of Danneviike; knitting, by Mrs A. Gulliford, Norsewood; and hairpin work by Mrs Anderson, York street, Dannevirke. All the exhibitions wero displayed to tho best advantage. In the needlework section were to be seen vex-y finely-worked table cehtres, d'oyleyS, exquisite coat hangers, shoe tvees, etc., tho colourings chosen being as attractive as the craftsmanship. Tu the knitting. stall there were snug gaiments for men, women, and children, Tea cosies were numerous. The xug display was an especially attractive section. Dark rugs, bright rugs, plain rugs, fancy rugs, rugs of wool,. rugs of felt, and rugs of waste matawai, all these types were exhibited and tho designs of some were wonderfuL In the arts and crafts stall were daint.y pilk duchess sets, novel table mata, artistic shell-covered boxes, bread b'oards, pictures, papier maehe articles, an example of book-binding, and an ingenio'us cigarette box mado by a hospital patient with a pocket knit'e. Baslcet-work was represented in trays, st.ffOls, boxes of several types, work baskets and other articles of utility. In the beaten-metal 'work display appeared book-ends, bread boards, a box kerb, a iire-screen, etc. In the toy display were bunnies, dogs, pengmns, ropsters, etc. Tempting examples of culinary skill Were located at the home industry stall. Several rows of spaeo were; devoted to pictures and cushions and these exhibits' formed one of the most beautiful eections of the exhibition. Innumerable banners and other articles, including quilts,"'were displayed. The Competitions The competitions resulted as follow — . Knitted bed jacket.—Mrs P.
