BEAUTIFUL LAWNS

Strong luxuriant growth is always a desirable feature in lawns. Sulphate of, ammonia supplies nitrogen, the prihcipal plant food required by lawn grasses. It is quick acting, promotes vigorous growth, and imparts a rich greeu colour to lawns. The best. inetbod of application is in liquid form, for then an even distribution is ensured, Average conditions favour -periodic aplications of sulphate of ammonia atthe rate of |oz (one teaspoon) in a gallon of water per square yard of lawn. JDissovle 2oz of sulphate of ammonia in 4 gallons of water, and by applying this over the 4 square yards the desired dressing is obtained. The simplest method of applying the solution is as follows : — Stretch the line (a) across the lawn parallel to and 3ft from the edge of the grass, This marks out a strip of lawn 1 yard wide. Water the lawn with a solution of the above strengtli, using 4 gallons to 4 running yards of grass, and see that the spread of the rose of the watering can covers the width of the strip. After completiug the first strip, stretch a seeond line (b) across the lawn parallel to (a) and 3ft from it, and use the liquid as before. When the second strip is doue move line (a) to form another strip, and keep on moving the inside line until the job is complete. By using two lines and always moving the inner one, the edge of the completed strip is always shown. Systematic attention and close cutting througliout the whole year have a great deal to do with the strength of the grass to witlistand the sudden and excessive heat of summer. Sulphate of ammonia, rn atklition to its beneficial aotioja on lawn grasses, also tends to check growth of sliallow-rooted weeds and clovers.
