FINED FOR ASSAULT
Man Who Struck RestaurantKeeper "HAT A FEW DRINKS" "The business people kaye to he protected from this sort of thing, ; commented the Beneh at the Hastings Police Court this morning when George John Clenry, aged 30, appeared before Messrs F. C, Wilkinson and A. J. C. Runciman, J.B.'s, on a charge" of assaulting Claude William Lorigan; He pleaded guilty, i Senuor-Sergeant G. Sivyer. said that late last night the accused and a companion entered the eomplainant 's restaurant and ordered supper. His order was taken by a daughter of the 'proprietor, who asked the two to move lo another table which was laid out. The accused took exception to the request and used strong language, whereupon the girl called her father. On the latter 's arrival the accused assaulted him, striking him a nasty blow on an eye. "Cleary was obviously under the influenee of liquor," said the police officer, "It is evident that when in this state he mnst fight, He has been convicted previously on three occasions for fighting and once for misehief. He is a resident of Napier, and the only explanation he had to offer was that he had had a few drinks." The Bonch said tliat they would be very costly drinks. "This is your fifth offence and it is evident that drink will be your downfall if you ean't give it up," added the Bench.when imposing a fine of £5, with 8/- costs. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment.
