The German Embassy made informal representations to the State Department over the criticisms of Herr Hitler and his policy with . regard to the Gatholie Church made by Cardinal Mundelein, the Archbishop of Chicago, who, when addressing 500 churchmen, asked "how a nation of 60,000,000 intelligent people could submit in fear and servitude to an alien Austrian paperhanger and a few associates lilte Dr. Goebbels and General Gpering, and intimated that eharges of immorfvlity made against nuns and monks were made simply for propaganda purposeB. The new German Ambassador, Herr Deickhoffi, deplored the address whieh, he said, was caiculated to put a furthor strain on American-German relations. A Eome message states that the Vatican does not intend to reprove Cardinal Muixdelein, It is stated that no action is contemplated because free speech is allowed dn the IJnited States.
