Australian Government Withdraws Action (Beceived 21. S.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 20. The Cpmmonwealth Government, pursuant to its political pledges, had directed the supprcssion of Soviet an« Communist organisations in Australia. Nothing was heard of these proceedings until to-oay when. with dramatic suddcnness Mr. J. Bowie \)[ilson, representing the Pederal. Attorney-General, asked Mr. Jnstice Evatt in the Hign Court to dimisa an action against tho Frieads of the Soviet IJnion and other Communist bodies which had been Called upon under the Crinies Act to show cause why they shoula not be declared illegal a'ssoeiations. A cross-action by Mr. William Thomas, a financial member of vhe Soviet IJnion, whq had claimed £5000. damages from the Commonwealth for the destruction of Soviet literature, was also pending. By agreement Mr. Justice Evatt struck out all tho aetions.
