Tenders Being Called For Hastings POSITION ELSEWHERE

WELLINGTON, Laat Night. ! Ia an interview this evening, Mt. J. A. Lee, Parliaaentary Under-Secretary in eharge oi housing, said the lowest tenders for tfce oonstrqetion of dwellingt in Palmerston North and Wanganui nnder the Government's housingj scheme were submitted by TowmshendJ( Ltd., and Higgins and Arcus respective-; ly? He said their tenders were substantially the lowest. If these firm* compiete d certain for.malities to the satisfaction of the Deipartment of Housing Construction, they •would probably receive more contracts, (There were 24 houses in the Palmerston North group, the tender of Higgins and jArcus xelating to 18 and that of Townshend, Ltd., te the remaining 11. (The Wanganui grqup eompnsed 25 jhouses. Mr. Lee said a f eature of the Palmerston North and Wanganui schemes was the provision made for the construction of a limited number of two-unit houses. .This would also be a feature in all tfuture schemes. He said tenders were now being called for Hastings and Oamaru. So far as Oamaru was concerned alternative •quotes were being asked for Oamaru ;ston« for chimneys and piles as against iconcrete. Cabinet had approved the purchase of jland at New Plymouth from the Newton !King, Ltd., estate. This area would projvide sufficient space for 100 houses. Cabinet had also approved the acquis'ition of land at Otahuhu for housing purposes and the Patea Borough Council had offered land at £1 a section; The land in question was sufficient for 34 houses.
