Continued Improvement In Returns PRICES GENERALLY RISE
(Britieb Wirelesir.) * (Received 19, 8.45 a.m.) RUGBY, May 18, Although the general expansion shown in the overseas trade returns for April is, as for some time past, attributable in a considerable degree to the rising prices, the advance is such as to point to the real and continued improvement in international trade. Reduced to woxking day averages, the imports in April were valued at £3,187,342, eompared with £2,777,651 in the same month of last year. The exports wero valued at £1,654,886, against £1,392,797 a year ago, and the reexports at £279,788. eompared with £246,752 in April 12 months ago, The amount of £7,348,674, of the total increase of £9,599,887 in the value of exports of United Kingdom goods last month, eompared with April, 1936, is accounted for by exports of manufactured goods. The cotton and iron % and steel industries show large increases. The exports of cotton yarns and manufactares in April were valued at £5,855,168, a rise of £1,252,195 over the previous April. In the first quarter of 1937, 47.2 per cent. of the experts went to British countries, eompared with 48.4 per eent. in the same period of .1936.
