NECESSITY OF BAND* FOR ANZAC DAY
WAIPAWA, This Day. The annual general meeting of the Waipawa and District Beturned Soidiers ' Association was held in the Munieipal Chambers last evening, Mr. H. T. Limbriek beiug in the chair. The annual report aud balance-sheet were adopted. The eleetion of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows; — Presideut, Mr. H. T. Licnbrick ; vice-presi-dent, Mr. C. G. E. Harkor; hon. auditor, Mr. N. I. Nielson; secretary, Mr. P. Adeane; treasurer, Mr. E. W. Ohisholm; eommittee, Messrs. W. Hawke, F. Eagle, B. Wynn, N. Wisemau and L. 0 'Halloran, and Messrs. G. Yoyce (Otane represeutative), H. Norris (Omakere), L. W. Simpson (Ouga Onga), aud T. O'Bourke (Tikokino). The subscriptions for the year were fixed at 5/-, and 3/- for registered unomployed members. A grant of £1 1/- was cnade to the honorary_ auditor, and £5 5/- to the joint seeretaiies. A letter was received from the Domiuion exeeutive advising that the Major-General Sir Andrew BusseH Portrait Eund was still open, and requesting that any contributions be sent in as sopn as possible. Intimation was also received from the exeeutive that the Dominion conference would be held at Wellington on June 23 and 24. A letter was- received from Mr. j. Bussell, expressing regret at the lack of support accorded by members of the association to the Munieipal Band on the occasion of its Auzac night concert. — -Eegret was expressed by the members that they had not supported the function, and it was resolvecL that this regret be conveyed to Mr. Bussell with an expression of appreciation of the services rendexed by the . band in past years. " . Beference was made'to the necessity of having a band for - the Anzac sexr vices, which would require an almost immediate start to be ready in time for the ceremony next " year. It was stressed that the assdciation should give every assistance- to any movement for the forcnation of a new band. It was xesolved that a letter be sent to the Borough Council expressing regret at the xesignation of the band and urging them to take steps towards ieconstruction as soon as possible. The chairman xeferred to the postponement, on account of the epidemic, of the monster - pienic which was to have been held in March ^ last, ^ and stated that everything was in "eadiness to hold the gathering at ah opportune time. . . Beference was made to the condition of the soldiers' graves in the cemetery, and it was resolved that information in the cnatter be sought from the Dofeinion exeeutive. , „ The meeting closed with a vote oi thauks to the chair. ' ' Annual Eeport. The annual report xead as follows: The balance-sheet for the year shows au excess of revenue over expenditure of £2 4/8, and a balauce of £31 18/5 m the accumulated fund. The membership shows a small mcrease over last year's figures, the financial membership as at March 3a. being 83, an increase of 11. There is still room for improvemeut as far as our membership . is concerned. Quite a number of new members have already jolned for the coming year, and we would suggest that ali : members do their utmost to secure at least one new member during the coming year. The annual re-union resulted in a small profit. It was a huge success both from point of numbers, visitors, who were present from other associations and the varied* programiue submitted. Visitors were present from Dannevirke, Takapauj Waipukurau Otane, Hastings and Napier. We are indebted to several local people for donations towards this re-union, and wish to thank all members who aSsisted with the arrangements. • The usual ceremonial was carried out on Anzac Day, and wrealhs were placed on the diggers' graves in tFe cemetery. Gur special thanks are due to Mr. Maher and members of the band, the High School cadets, and to the ladies' eommittee who assisted with the sale of poppies and making of wreaths. Local members also visited Otane, Tikokino and" Ongaonga for the functions held there, and. we wish to thank the ladies of Tikokino for prqviding afternoon tea. The balance in credit with the Poppy Day . nd canteeii funds trust aceouuts as at March 31 is £66 18/7, the sum of £15 6/- being paid out during the year in sundry wages in relief of distress. General interest in the association is still being maintained by members, and in the opinion of your eommittee the present year should prove to be in every way one of the most successful in record. It is gratifying that some of our members were seleeted as members of the Cofonation contingent, and we feel sure they will uphold the good namo of the N.Z.B.SA. and New Zealand. A message of congratulation and .good luck was forwarded to the officer coramanding the Coronation contingent from the combined associations when they met.at Takapau some ruouths ago to discuss arrangeinents in connection with the combined pienic. During the year several meotings wero held of delegatcs from tlio combined WoodVille-Napier association with a view to holdiug a monster combined B.S.A. picnic at WaipaAva. Ou two- occasion s definite dates were fixed for the holding of this pienic, but, unfortunately, owing to the infantilo paralygis epidemic, it was Jelt advisable to postpone it. Howevcr, the neeessary funds and prelipiinary arrangements are in hand for the carrying on of this function at a suitable
date. The members of your eommittee feel sure all Diggers will cooperate to make this picuic a wonderful success when the time comes. As this is the 21st anniversary of the foundation of the N.Z.B.S., your association, in conjunction with the N.Z.B.S.A., has presented to the Mayor, as representative of Ihe citizens of Waipawa, and to Mr. N. M. Paulsen, as chairman of the Waipawa County Council and representative of the citizens of the Waipawa County Council, a framed and suitable inscribed illuminated address in appreciation of the services rendered to exservicemen by the citizens of this district during and since the Great War. The thanks of the association is due to Mr. N. I. Nielson, for auditiug, and to all who have assisted in any of the association 's activities throughout the year.
