WORK AT HOMER ENDS

... -PresB & ssoel ation . I

Men Transferred to Other Jobs TO BE RESUMED LATER

(Bt Teleffraph-

• INVEROARGILL, Last' Night. Work at the Homer tunnel has been j .abandoned for the winter. A consider-i j able number of men has already beeni 1 withdrawn from Homer camp and it isj expected that the xemainder will bej transferred to other work within twoj (or three weeks. The diatriot engineer of the Publicj [Works Department (Mr. W. G, Pearce)! said to-day that a number of men hadi already been transferred to Manuka1 . Gorge near Milton. The number of the: imen employed on the Homer-McKerrow 'section of the Hollyford .Valley road [has been increased and other men were fbeing employed on road improvement [work between Te Anau and The Key. , [Within two, or three weeks the remain-; iing men at Homer camp would be trans-j ferred to the Dipton-Caroline road. Mr. Pearce said the plant had beenj fwithdrawn from the tunnel and for thej [winter there would he no eontrol overi jthe seepage of water in the tunnel, |whioh would be'allowed to fill. i The date of resumption of the workj [was indeflnite and would depend en« Itirely on how soon after winter thej [snow likely to cause avalanches was [cleared from the heights above the imouth of the tunnel. The period durling which work had to cease would jnaturally slow up the work of driving Ithe tunnel. | At the Milford end of the xoad 120 or 130 men were employed on road construction and the first five miles ofi that section of the work was proceedingj satisfactorily. About three miles ofj the road on that section had been eom- j pleted and the total length to com-j plete the road to the western portion of I the .tunnel was about 11 miles. .. 1
