SAFETY FOR FISHING CRAFT

Appeal for Dredging oi the lnner Harbour Entrance J.D.O. TO BE USED Stating that their work was very hazardous, and that the fishing and other* industries were handicapped when there was any sea running owing to the danger to vessels leaving or entering tlie harbour, a ietter from sixteen trawler captains and the Napier WV.terside Workers' TJnion asked the N | ior Harbour Board to dredge betweeu the piers at the entrance to the Inner Harbour to make navigation possible at low water in all weathers. The board considered the Ietter and decided that the dredge J.D.O. would be put on at the Inner Harbour entrance when conditions ara favourable. "We aro firmly convinced, " the Ietter stated, "that the depth at tho Inner Harbour entrance could be maiatained if tho dredge were put on and the work done would confer inestimable advantages to the shipping of the port, at the same tirtfe the board would be doing much to promote the safety of life and pro'perty. "We have kesitated to complain on this matter before in view Of the major scheme which has been commanding the whole of your time. However, we feel now that in the interests of ihe safety of the men who constantly use. this channel in fair weather and foul, and in the interests of those twhose capital is invested in the craft which ply these wators, that action must be t.aken to deepen the water sufficiently for the purposes of the fishing and small vessels which nse this area." Letters dealing with this matter were rcceived recently from a number of shipping companies. The board confirmed the action of tho sccretary, Mr. V. P. Sanders, in replying that the J.D.O. would be doaliug with tho shoaling at the Inner Harbour entrance as soon as conditions wore favourable
