Government Fully Appreciates Position CHAMBER SETS UP COMMITTEE In furtherance of the, decision rfached at a recent conference in Wellington concerning forest presfervation and amenity planfings, the Hastings Chamber of Commerce decided last evening to appoint a special committee to consider the formation of a provisional committee for this district as a preliminary to the setting-up of a national executive. A full report of the conference, the main features of whichi were outlined in a special report provided by Mr F. E. Smith at the last meeting ot the Chamber, was before last night's meeting, having been forwarded by the Minister of Internal Affairs. Mr Smith considered that it was of the Utmost importance that every care and discrimination should be sliown in the selection of the provisional committee so that all concerned in the matter should be represented. He was of the opinion that the Railways Department, the Post and Telegraph, the Power Board and the Dramage Board, for example, should be represented beeause their activities and services would all be affected either by the planting or the cutting of trces. "It is important that we should .have the right men on the committee so that the interests of the whoJe district can be watched and guavcied," he said. Mr Smith added that it was obsdous from tbe statements made at the conference that the present Government was fully appreciative of the position and conversant with the need toi lorest preservation. "I would like to say also that I believe that this state of affairs js directly due to the work of this Chamber some years ago," be said. "I am quite satisfied that the labour of this Chamber has not been in vain, but it must be remembered ihat t.bis is a national matter, and the Go/erument will require the full support oi all the districts."
