CARDIFF, May 15. Encountering ^teady bowling supported by keen nelding the New Zealand tourists batted yyitk sedate deliberation, all giving the impression that they were desirous of playing into forin in view of the iack of practiee due to thc wet week in London. Nevertheless credit is due to the county bowlers for keeping the scoring rate down to 235 in live hours. ,Thi« was maiuly due to the accuracy of the mediuin-paced swing bowling of the 42-year-old Mercer and the bothorsome oifspinners of the new bowling star, Jones, whose record this season includes 8 for - 80 against Sussex. Except Wallace and Roberts, who both fell to sinart throws-in, and Lainason, who was an eariy victim to the new ball, all had lengthy if quiet innings. Kerr and Vivian were the brightest ol"the batsmen, the former batting half-an-hour and hitting four fours. ' The latter was in an hour, scoring three fours. Hadlee was at the wickets for over an hour and Moioney for over two hours. Page and Tindill were there an hour and a-half each. Moioney and Vivian added 56 for ,the third wicket and Page and Tindill 79 for the sixth. All the innings were chanceless till the dismissals. The county batted fpr half-an-hour to the bowling of Roberts, Dunning and .Vivian. Scores: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
