llredger Whakarire: The board's bucket dredger Whakarire arrived back m i\ apier from annual overliaul in Wellington on April 12 and, after clearing the ship for work and laying the necessary uioorings, resumeu dredgmg near the root and close inshore to the west of the site of Wharf No 4 on April 16. Uperations were kampered iu tlus Jocality by range and big boulders, but cut jNo 5 was completed and battered olf inshore by Aprn 30, and not a great deal remains to be dredged m cufc No 6 east. The Whakarire' s retum for the period was 14.350 tons, bringing the total output of thg dredger since hrst coming to Napier to 824, UoO tons. The SVhatarire is at present working two shirt% daily. Dredger Hapai : Dntil the Whakarire arrived back from annual overliaul, tlie Auckland Harbour Board's dredger Hapai continued deepeniug the eastern bertii of tlie site of Wharf No 4 to its full width and to its tinal low water depth of 35 feet. The Hapai then moved back to the basin betweeii the Glasgow Wharf and Wharf No 3, and carried one of the cuts inshore to its linal low water depth of 30 feet, thereafter commencing the widening of the eastern bertb of Wharf No 3 to its full width and to its tinal low water depth of 35 feet. The Hapai's return for the month was 17,600 tons, bringing the Hapai's total output, since commencing work at Napier, to 101.967 tons. No 3 Wharf : By mutual agreement the contract with Messrs Beliam and Murray, Ltd., was terminated on April 22, the board taking over the works on the following day. No time. was lost in removing unnecessary plant from the works, in clearing the site, and in stiffening the temporary staging already erected. Preparations were then made for the construction of the abutment, and the driving of the footing-wall piles was actually commenced, 16»inches by 16 inches piles ex-stock being utilised for the purpose. Boring is not, called for in the driving of these particular piles, Cert^in plant required for the equipment to be used in the conBtruction of the wharf proper has already been ordered from Home. Breakwater Extension: Tlie contractor for the extension of the Breakwater built Seetions Nos 11 and 12 tliereof, thereby adding about anotlier 24$ feet and bringing the total length. of the extension to 147$ feet. He also made 65 larger-sized concrete blocks in the yard.
