ITALY'S AIR STRENGTH
New Bases Being Built (Eeeeived 17, 8.45 a.m.) EOME, May 16. "The centre of gravity for Italy 's air force has moved from Northern Italy to the Mediterranean, the Eed Sea and the Indian Ocean," declared General Giuseeppe Valle, Italian UnderSecretary for Air, after referring to Britain 's increased aerial expenditure in the Senate. The Senate approved of the 1937-38 air estimates of £14,000,000. "This • explains - the strengthening of our air bases in Sicily, Sardinia, the Aegian Sea, Pantfillaria and Tobruk, allowing our air divisions to pass over the Mediterranean in a few houite," continued the General, who declared that Italian aerial equipment contsisted of "modern to most modern" fighters, capablo of climbing to 24,000 feet in eight minutes, with a speed of nearly 300 miles an hour. The pilots exceeded ten thousand, and more than 20,000 workers were building new bases.
