MINE CAUSED EXPLOSION
Investigations Into Hunter Mishap GIBRALTAR, May 16. • The report of a diver confirms the tkeory that H.M.S. Hunter struck a mina. A message from Almeria states that the Ministry of Marino reports that a mine has been found near where the Hunter was damaged. It is believed to be one 'of the same description that .caused the explosion ou the Hunter. Not since the Great War has a British warsliip reached port exhibitiiig sucli damage as H.M.S. Hunter when she was towed in stern hrst by H.M.S. Arethura. She was low in the water, with her bow portholes subinerged. The damage amidships on the starboard side suggests' that she was struck immediately beneath the break in the forecastle. The plating on the port side was also bent and torn, indicating the impact had been forcible. The oii staines show that the explosion flung up a column of fuel. The foremast. was snapped, the aerial destroyed and the davits sinashed. necessitating the sfecuring of the lifeboats by wire hawsers. The decks were strewn with debris. H.M.S. Hunter was placed in dry dock.
