EdU" cated at Merchhnt Taylor's School gnd St John's College, Oxford, he took first class honours in elassieai languages and later in social sciences. His first appointment was to the ministry bntin 1901 he resigned to beeome Sixth Form Master at Leeds Grammar School. In 1906 he assumed the headma'stership of Bristol Grammar School. After a few years at Marlborough College he became headmaster at the famous Hai'row School. In 1935 he was appointed President of St. John's College, Oxford, the position which he now holds.
