Mr and Mrs S. A. Bainbridge, Baupare, have left on a holiday in the Gisborne and Auckland districts. Constable C. T. Deakin, of the Hastings Police Force., who is on ' annual leave, left this morning for Wellington. Mr C. W. Corner, superintendent of Napier borough reserves, left Napier this morning on a six-months visit to England. Commander L. B. Vdtali, D.S.C., arrived at Wellington to-day by the Awatea to take up the position of consul for Italy in New Zealand. Until reeently he was acting-Consul-General at Sydney. — Press Assn iSquadron-Leader , M. W. Buckley, officer commanding the Hobsonville Air Base, will leave for England to-morrow on exehange with the Royal Air Force for two years. His successor at Hobsonville has not yet been announced. The Bev. Evan B. Harries, who was at one time a well-known Presbyterian minister in Timaru, Wanganui and Auckland, and has since been tionnectUd with the British Syrian Mission, has returned to New Zealand. Mr C. A. Dollomore, of Hadiield Terrace, Napier, left by • the express train on Saturday morning for Wellington, where he will leave by the Maunganui for Sydney to join the Ormonde for London. Mr Dollomore will be absent from Napier for six months.

Mr W. L. Dunn, secretary of the Hawke 's Bay Education Board, who has been granted special leave of absence to enable him to take part in the organisation of the New Zealand Educational Institute conference, left Napier this morning on a , visit to Wellington. Miss Mary K. Neff, of Ameriea, author, international lecturer and educationalist, will arrive in Hastings today. She has reeently concluded a very successful lecture tour of the South Island, and during her week's stay in Hastings she will lecture from the platform of the Theosophical Society. Mr C. M. Segedin has been appointed assistant lecturer in mathematics at Auckland University College Mr Segedin, who is the youngest lecturer of the college, being only 21 years of age, gained a university entrance scholarship from the Auckland Grammar School. He graduated B.Sc. in 1936 and M.Sc. this year. Last year he gained the senior scholarship in pure mathematics.
