SOCIAL EVENING HELD BY MACHINE GUN COMPANY

The popularity of the social evenings organised by the members of the 31acliine Gun Couipany, Hastings, was evidenced on Friday evening, for, despite the unscitled weather, a large number attended the social held in the Drill Hall. These socials have been field as an opportunity for members to become better acquainted witli tlieir fellow-men and officers. Recently, kowever, these occasions have given the members an opportunity to show their appreciation to various members, and tliroUgh the courtesy of Mr and Mrs F. Curtis, Dufferin street, the company made this evening the cclebration of the coming-of-age of their son. Ernest. The social was held in the newlyforined library room, which was decorated in colours in keeping with the Coronation celebrations. Captain H. McKay, before making the presentation of an engraved cigarette case, spoke in glowing terms of the guest-of-honour's ability in the company, more so as custodian of the library. Q.M.S. Jonson referred to the work tha,t Mrs Curtis had done in supplying a most delicious supper, and he felt thas snch work could not go past witliout some appreciation, with the result that a presentation of a crystal flower bowl was made to ker. Mr E. Curtis suitably replied, and Mr D. Curtis replied for Mrs Curtis. The evening was spenij in smging old favourites, wliich everyone entered into with good hearted gusto. Musical itenis were given by Sgt. Hawkins (piano) and Pte. G. Godber (drums). This item earned well-deserved applause. Pte. T. Thornburrow entertained with conjuror's tricks and his manipulations were a revelation. Pte. Patinore gave month organ solos, and his rendering of ' 'Smile the Wliile" and "Isle of Caprie" were well given. The evening concluded at a late hour with the singing of "God Save the King" and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."
