Waipawa Meeting

WAIPAWA, Last Nighit. The montlily rueetmg of the Waipawa Women' s lnstitute was held on Friday afternoon, Miss D. Jull presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with' the singing of the lnstitute jsong, Mrs Strang being at the piano. A very fine collection of Royal souvenirs was on yiew, particularly a "Scrap Book" which had belonged to the late Mrs James Bibby, contuining views and pictures back to the timo o£ Queen Victoria. Hearty votes of thanks jvere accorded to the judges, donors of prizes and trophies, and performers, ju connection with ,the recent chrysanthemum show.The financial statement presented by the secretary disclosed an excellent result from the show. The members of the institute responsible for the exhibit in the Coronation procession were congratulated on their eiforts. Thianks were also accorded to Mr Preston for the use of hia lorry, and to Messrs R. Parkin, J. Fox and F. Adeane for their assistance. Considerable discussion took place o» whether it was advisable to retain the present system of hostesses in connection with the afternoon tea, or whether it would be better for every member to contribute something at each meeting. The matter was held over for further discussion. Miss Jull gave a short talk on "Women of Rhodesia", this being the first talk in the Golden Thread series on "Women of other Countries." A very interesting address was also given by Mr A. E. Jull on "The Throne as a Link of Empire." The speaker sketched the rise of the British Empire and the changes in recent times from the rigid domination that lost to ua the American Colonies, to the present freedem of Government enjoyed by overseas Dominions. The sole link was the Throne, the bond of unity, in the union of the British Commonwealth of Nations. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Jull at the conclusion of his address. ) An invitation to be present at the Hatuma birtbday on May 21, 'was received', also a reminder that the handicraft exhibition would be held at Dannevirke on. May 20. A short musical programme was presented, Miss B. Towers singing, 1 sSoldiers of the King", followed by the singing of patriotic songs by the gathering, Mrs Strang being at the piano. A competition for a knitted bed jacket was won by Mrs A. Logan, with Mrs W. Harwood second. The prizo for the best bloom went to Miss Frobath. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Pepperell, H. Taylor, Robertson, and Miss Frobatb.
