EIGHTH BIRTHDAY OF TAKAPAU INSTITUTE

The Takapau Women's Institute held its eighth birthday party in the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon. The stage was heautifully decorated with bowls of marigolds (Takapau Institute's floral emblem), chrysanthemums and autumn leayes. The afternoon tea tables looked beautiful} with. vases of marigolds, greenery and autumn leaves. The meeting opened with the Institute song, after which Mrs W. B. White, president, read the Aspiration. Mrs White extended a hearty welcome to visitors and members and hoped they would all enjoy tliemselves. There were visitors present from Waipukurau, Waipawa, Marakeke and Otawhao. Mrs Mackie, a Takapau member wbo is in hospital, wa» extended a vote of sympathy in her illness. A very interesting programme was rendered as follows : Tap-danemg by Miss Nancy Vaughan, wbo responded to encores, and solos were sung by Mrs H. Bjongaard, jvho played her own accompaniments. An amusing play entitled "Widows" was acted by Mrs G. Robertson, Mrs G. May, and Mrs O. Olsen, each af them doing their part well. Community singing led by Mrs W. Edgecombe was much enjoyed. A game of musical parcels was won by Mrs W. Edgecombe, Miss S. Thomsen being second. The points' prize for the year was won by Mrs G. Robertson, wbo was presented with the Armstrong Cup and miniature. Mrs P. Sanders the run-ner-up, was presented with a crystal bowj (Mrs Little's trophy). A delicious afternoon tea was served and a feature of the tables was a beautifully iced and decorated in Coronation colours, birtlTday cake. Mrs H. Oldershaw being accorded musical honours for making and icing the cake. Mrs Douglas, being the oldest member of the Takapau Institute, lit the candles and Mrs Oldershaw's small daughter blew them out. Mrs Duckworth, of Waipukurau, on behalf of the visitors, expressed thanks, saying it was always a pleasure to como to the Takapau gatherings.
