BOROUGH'S APPRECIATION OF WOMEN'S SERVICES
In recognition and appreciation of the co-operation and help given by the women of Hastings, the Hastings Borough Council, on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee, tendered a most successful afternoon tea lo representatives of women 's ' oiganisations and the wives of loeal body representatives at the Eawke's Bay Farmers ' tearooma yesterday afternoon. The Mayoress, Mrs G. A. Maddison, and the Coummlors ' wives, Mesdames A. I. Eainbow, M. Cohr, P. Loach, G. W. McCormick, C. H. Slater, T. Fali crner, S. J. McKee and T. Dobson, were the hostesses, and the guests were welcomed by Mrs G. A. Maddison, Mrs A. I. Eainbow, wife of the deputy-mayor, and Mrs Noel Harding, wife of the Town Clerk. "This is an appropriate occasion for us to re-affirm our loyalty and affection for Their GraciouS Majesties, King George YI. and Queen Elizaheth," said Mrs Maddison, and everyone joined in singing the National Anthem. After extending a speeial welcome to all present, Mrs Maddison apologised for several who were unfortunately absent, Mrs George Eoach, Mrs H. W. C. Baird, Mrs Mortimer-Jones and Mrs» E, B. Gosnell. A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed by everyone, and then several appropriate toasts were honoured and some exeelieht items given. ra.rs Maddison proposed the toast to "The jubilee and Our Town" and several former Mayoresses who were present replied, These were: Mesdams T. J. Thompson, J. A. Millar, W. Hart, H. lan Simson. MrsA. Garnett was present butdidnot sj»eak. Mrs-F. S. Budd played two piano solos, "Caprice" (Aerian) and a charm ing little piece "Shivery Grass, ' ' which slie composed herself. She also ably accompanied Miss Enid Lusher, whose Aute solos were greatly enjoyed.-* Mrs Ulric Williame sang "Butterfly Wings" and "Sylvia," and as an encore "Love's Garden of Eoses.r' Mrs htaddison thanked the performers for their items. The toast to the women 's organisations was proposed by t, Mrs A. F. Glenny, . president of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild, who Baid she firmly believed that women 's organisations were well worth while as they gave fresh ideas, broadened the members' views and gave opportunity for sfervice. "The n'se of gas and electricity in the home has given women more time," said Mrs Glenny, "and they can have interests outside their homes.
