Napier Man Charged With Breaking and Entering COURT ALLOWS BAIL > Pleading not guilty to a charge of breaking and entexing by day the house of Herbert James Mott with iutent to commit a crimd, Johxx Windle,? of Napier, labourer, was committed to the Supreme Court at Napier for trial by Mr J. Miller, S.M., after the preilminary hearing in the Napier Magistrate's Court this morning. Mr O, G. B. Harker appeared for the defence, and Senior-Sergeant W. Pender condueted the case' for the police. Bail was allowed for £150, with securities amounfing to £150. The evidence revealed that, although nothing was nxissing from the lxouse, it appeared whexi Mrs Mott returned from a visit that the house had been entered. One window had been opened, and the mats on the floor were disarranged as ihoughi someone had run through the house in. a hurry. A bicycle produced in Court was identified as oue which had been outside the gate of the house most of the day. When she returned from sehool on that day, Jean Marjory Mott tried to open a door insxde the house which had been locked. .The handle jvould not turn but when her friend tried the door it opened with a jerk. They screamed and ran away. Later they saw a man come out of the gate, mount the bicycle and ride away. On the following day, witness saw the bicycle once more in the street. The man who had ridden it was working in fche street, and was identified by witness as the accused. Constable J. Smith said that Jean Mott and her friend had identified the accused and his bicycle in Nelson Crescent ■ the following morning. When quedtioned, accused had denied aUy knowledge of the man jvho had been in the house, saying that he had no reason to steal, as he had a good job. When arrested, he saxd there must have been some mistake.
