HOMES WITH RADIO

68 Per Cent. Equipped DOMINION SURVEY The Post OfSce ra responsible fpr a radio gurvey of the Dqminion from a new angle, It hag been able tp aecertain how near we are approaching to jwhat might be termed the fuli potential demand for radio licenses which, it is assumed, would reach the maximum when every house in New Zealand has its radio-receiving set. The investiga* tion showed that over 68 per cent of the households are already equipped in this way. Disregardjng figures of total population, Post Office offieials based their calculations upon the actual number of household's in all ppgtal digtrictp, contrasting these figures with the number of receiving licences current at the end of March in the same areas. A grouping of the Dominion' figures showed the following results; Households, 352,536; radio licences, 240,733j per cent. licences to households, 68.29. Eadio has reached its greatest popularity according to this survey in the Wellington radio district where the proportion of licences to households is 70.63 per cent. Auckland radio district follows with 68,66 per" cent; Christchurch" district (including the West Coast) with 67,22 per cent; and OtagoSouthland 63.28 per cent. , Eadio listeners' licences have been increasing rapidly of reeent years. The advance in 1935-36 was 39,357, and in 1936-37 a further 48,887. At this rate of progress it seems probable that within another twelve months the proportion of New Zealand home equipped with radio-receiving set's will be at least 80 per cent.
