DANNEVIRKE HUNT

Successful Meet at Forest Gate MANY F0LL0WERS ... (Contribnted) The meet of the Dannevirke Hounds on Tuesday was at Forest Gate, the property ,of the deputy-master, Mr DunCan Holden, and being a bye day for the Hawke's Bay Hunt, quite a number. of their members were hunting with the neighbouring pack. Moving off at 12 o'clock from the woolshed, hounds worked up . over the hill in front of the house and put up a hare within the first few minutes. It turned' left-handed and gave a good line behind the homestead, then doubling back, crossed the stream and made for the young grass. Hounds' working through this, turned their quarry back to the creek. Checked in some gorse on the bank, the hare agaln crossed the water and was killed under the pines almost where jt had been put up. * After a 15-minute spell the hounds moved to the higher country, and after some- time found another line, which led to the manuka' on the creekbed, then back to the hills, giving the chance for some good jumping to the followers. Checking nearly among the spectators and cars for five minutes, the hounds got scent again and went back to the scrub patch, where finally they lost. By this time the sun had gone and it was raining with a cold wind. Hounds were stiil keen and another hare wa% found, but scent was not holding and Mr Holden took the pack in. The followers of the Hawke's Bay Hunt greatly appreciated the good day's sport and the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Holden. It was a good hunt over good country.
