SPANISH REFUGEES

Society oi Friends Makes Appeal for Funds PLIGHT OF CHILDREN Funds for tke relief of refugee women and children from the war areas of Spain are being raised by the Society of Friends, whose noble work in earing for helpless sufferers in Belgium and Northern France was one of tne greatest humanitarian achievements of the Great War. Mr J. Flewellyn King, of Greenmeadows, writes asking that the Herald-Tribune should make the appeal known. If you can see your way clear to allow donations to be sent to you direct I shall be grateful," writes Mr King. "Otherwise they may be either sent to me or direct to Wellington." Into Catalonia — that large independent area— thousands of refugee children are pouring. By. the end of last year 100,000 children, as well as oia men and women, had reached Catalonia alone. The war has quite cut off Barcelona and the south from the dairy regions and milk i's almost unobtainable. It was estimated on January 3 that there must be at least half a million refugee children scattered throughout the provinces. The Society of Friends in Great Britain is working in conjunction with the Save the Children International Union of Geneva to render help. The most urgent needs are prepared infants' foods, cod-livr oil, milk and sugar. Milk is being donated from Switzerland but supplies are hopelessly inadequate. There should be ample stocks of New Zealand dned and condensed milk in London which could be purchased. The Society of Friends in New Zealand proposes to colleet money and to cable it Home promptly for this very purpose. The clerk to the Society of Friends in Wellington and Hawke's Bay is Mr Edward H. Dowsett, 51 Ponsonby road, Karori, Wellington, who gives the assurance that all relief will be disburaed irrespective of politics or creed.
