N.Z. LOSES TENNIS DOUBLES
Stedman Injured And Andrews Replaces MATCH WITH S. AFRICA
(Received 11, 12.30 a.m.) LONDON. May 10. In the Davis Cup doubles, Farquharson and Kirby (South Africa) defeated Malfroy and Andrews (N.Z)., 7__5, 6— -2, 6 2. Stedman etrained a ligament in his leg and will be unable to play for four or five weeks, for which reason Andrews partnered Malfroy. Andrews will also replace Stedman in the singles to-morrow. The New Zealanders started raggedly and the South Africans were more impressive, especially Kirby, with fine passing shots to the lines, Farquhax*son's low volleying at the net scored many winners. The South AfricanB led 5— 4 in the first set, but New Zealand defendiqg and lobbing well, drew level 5 — 5 after their opponents had two set points. Andrews was unable to hold the service bowever, and Kirby clinched the set after douhle faulting at'eet point. Farquhsrson'a overhead work dominated play , in the second set and he smashed many short lobs. The South Africaxxs in the third set combined still' better. Kirby hit many witoners from the return service and the New Zealanders could hold the service only twice.
