Midnight Smath at Auckland

AUCKLAND, Last Night, JTour. petsons were injured when a motor-car in which they were traveljliag, an old model tourer, collided head- . on with a city-bound tram on the Great Sonth road near Dilworth School about ten minutes after midnight on Satur* day. Three of the four in the car wero thrown on $o the road and.all were taken to the Auckland Hospital. Nono jof the passengers in the tram was injjured. ' The foHowing are the injured:— Cyril Francis Green, aged 32, unemjployed, of Ellerslie, head injuries. Frederick Linblom, aged 32,-unem-i ploysd, electrician, of Newton road, jhead injuries. • Ivy Cavenett, aged 40, married, 1 Parnell, head injuries. Edpa Salisbury, aged 25, single, factory worker, of Mount Eden, head injuries. The motor-ear was completely wreckOd and so severe was the impact that the engine was forced back several feet through the floor * boards into the driver's compartment. The bonnet and front portion became shapeless wreekage, the seats were thrown out on to the road, ,the doors wero torn oif and the hood collapsed. Glass and other portions of the car were strcwn across the road from kerb to kerb and the vehicle was so badly broken tip fhaT it was impossible to tow it away. It was dragged to the side of the road untS the rsoming. Veiy little damage was done to thc tram. The front bumper was slightly dented as well as the front of the motorman's cab, while the windscreen and. lamp were smashed. The motorman escaped uninjured, but the conductor was thrown half the length of the tram and twisted his back. He was not in need of medical attention, however. Thc passengers in 1 the tram- escaped with a severe shaldng. The scene of the accident was soon thronged with several hundred people, includiug WQmen in evening frocks xeturhing from dances and parties, while nearby xesidents came out in pyjamas and'dressing gowns to* xender assistanee. A working bce was formed and for half-an-hour ihe members were cngaged in sweeping the road with iraekets of water and slifi; yard brooms.
