LABOUR VICTORY
Country Party Seat Lost In N.S.W. (Received 10, 8.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 9 Polling in one of the keenest by-elec-tion fights in the Federal arena for a long time took place on Saturday in the extensive Gwvdir electorate, in northern New South Wales, for the seat made vacant by the resignation of Mr C. L. Abbott, who was recently appointed Adininistrator of the Northern Territory. The latest check of the voting figures reveals that Mr Scully has an absolute majority in the first pref erence whilo the outstanding votcs will not permit the nearest Country party candidate (Mr Bachelor) to make up the leeway. Mr Scully is therefor© returned. The seat has been in tlie hands of the Country Party since 1931, and formerly was held by Labour. There were three Counrty Party candidates on this occasion, Messrs E. G. Bachelor, O. L. Milling, and G. S. Moore, as well as the official Laboux- candidate, Mr W. J. Scully, who is a former member of the State legislature. Both political parties regard the outcome as a pointer to the forfchcoming Federal elections.
